Doug…..a disgraced and corrupt cop and a hidden main villain?
Doug was first introduced in Deadly College Murders. When Hannah describes him, she explains that Doug had just been fired from the Miami-Dade PD. When he reappears in her life, Doug confides to Hannah that he still cannot get past the death of his wife, and that the loss continues to shadow his days and choices.
While he did not have many direct interactions with any of the characters apart from Hannah, he vanished under mysterious circumstances once Hannah was put on trial. In the end, after Hannah confronts the culprit, it is strongly suggested—during a quiet, tense scene in Paris with her godfather—that there may still be one or possibly two principal hidden main masterminds at large, their identities and motives left deliberately unresolved.
Doug resurfaces in Deadly Vows: Echoes of College Crimes. After Hannah is involved in the accident—caused when a hooded figure forces one of the victims to cut her brakes—she begins dreaming of Doug while she’s in surgery and grows increasingly unsettled, haunted by nagging questions about who he really is and what he truly wants. When Rafael is hospitalized from stress, Hannah confides in her beloved godfather, telling him she plans to travel to Miami to dig deeper and finally uncover the truth about Doug’s identity. Not wanting his goddaughter to go alone, Raf accompanies Hannah to the Miami-Dade station to investigate and peel back layers of Doug’s past. When they learn that he was a disgraced, corrupt cop, Rafael is both shocked and disgusted, prompting a tense exchange with Hannah. He tells her that Doug reminds him of someone he once knew—(Donovan)—and admits he’s frightened for her safety now that she knows who Doug really is and what he might be capable of.
Tragically, as Hannah uncovers the secrets of Sofia’s past, she finds herself in grave danger and is violently attacked — leaving the haunting question: did Doug assault Hannah in New Orleans and cause her to lose her memory? The answers lie in DVEOCC.
