Character Profile: Det. Smith
Detective Smith
Straight to the point. No time to play games. Who is he? Smith made his debut in the first mystery series. Convinced that Hannah was guilty of the college murders, Smith was initially determined to see her receive the death penalty. However, while she sat in custody, he gradually began to doubt his first impressions and started to believe that Hannah had been truthful from the start — that someone else was responsible for the killings. After she ultimately solved the case, Smith offered her a position on his team, but she politely declined, choosing instead to begin a new life in Paris. Smith respected her decision, and he assured her that the offer would remain open whenever she decided she wanted it.
In Deadly Vows he assumes a more prominent role, becoming one of the trio who aids Rafael in uncovering the truth behind Connie’s murder. During the investigation he suffers a painful loss when his partner, Detective Frigon, is killed in front of him, and Smith vows to see justice done for her death. He grows more cordial with Hannah, though he continues to urge her to steer clear of the investigation for her own safety.
In Paris Noir, Smith plays a crucial part in executing Hannah’s risky plan: he assists in having her arrested so she can draw out the people who wish to harm her loved ones. He is heavily involved in efforts to ensure Donovan leaves both Hannah and Rafael alone, committing himself to protect them and see the case through to its resolution.
